As parents we have a lot of worries. And certainly we all worry about what can happen to our
children when they are away from us.
The Lovely Bones is a story about the death (and afterlife) of a bright,
curious and trusting 14 year old girl named Susie Salmon. No one, including Susie, knew about the
dangerous man living nearby.
She was taught not to speak with strangers, but Susie was put into a situation where her
curiosity overcame her apprehension just as her murderer had planned. The story is narrated by
her.
It is probably impossible to instill in our children an ability to quell their copious curiosity
in all situations where danger may lurk, but we do our best to protect them; just as Susie's
parents did their best.
Sometimes the worst possible thing happens. This is a movie about the violent death of a young
teenager.

We are witnesses of unfolding events without any power to stop them just as Susie was. The Lovely
Bones release gives Susie Salmon a voice about her death and some of what came after it. Her perspective
is a useful way to present this painful story without being overly emotional. Susie sees far more after death than
she did in her short life and clearly there is something to take away from that.
Aspects of our daily family lives can be irritants like when Susie is late getting home on the day of her death.
Anger turns to worry, worry to fear, fear to panic, and panic to anguish as Susie's parents come to realize the
full gravity of her absence. The normal daily life of millions of average families can be seen in The
Lovely Bones. Maybe there is a message there.
Ghost stories are so much more realistic now with all the modern computer graphics interfaced into the frames of
the movie. And Saoirse Ronan plays Susie Salmon with heart and spirit that draws the viewer in. She is superb.
Stanley Tucci as George Harvey fills the viewer with a sense of dread and a fervent hope that he is caught so
Susie can rest in peace and her family has some sense of closure. His role must have been very difficult to bring
to light in such a believable performance.
I didn't want to go watch this movie. I'm such a sap I knew it would make me cry but I was invited by a friend.
It wasn't the total tear-jerker I feared but I cried anyway. A mom must cry sometimes no matter how strong a woman
she is. If you want a kick in the ass to help you appreciate all that you have, this is a wonderful movie to
watch.
