Martin Clunes as Gary Strang in season one of Men Behaving Badly

The first season of Men Behaving Badly starred Harry Enfield and Martin Clunes. One story goes that Simon Nye wrote the series for Harry Enfield who played Dermot. He had worked with Martin Clunes previously, and that's how Martin came to be on Men Behaving Badly. After the first season Harry left the show leaving the door open for Neil Morrissey to play the part of the new roommate Tony starting in the second season.

British comedy is an acquired taste for many Americans. For some reason I prefer most of the British TV series to the American TV shows available on local network stations. There are exceptions of course.

Many plot lines developed in the first season of Men Behaving Badly are important to the show, so it's well worth watching and there are some good laughs in there too.

The basic plot to series one is that Gary Strang, played by Martin Clunes, has a mortgage on the lower flat of a two story building. He needs help with the mortgage so he has a roommate, Dermot, played by Harry Enfield. Dermot can't keep a job so Gary ends up paying the mortgage and supporting his roommate Dermot.

Upstairs lives the lovely neighbor Deborah, played by Leslie Ash. She becomes good friends with Gary's girlfriend Dorothy, played by Caroline Quentin and the object of constant desire for Gary and Dermot.

At the beginning of season two, Dermot has left and is not going to return so Gary looks for a new roommate to help pay the mortgage on the flat. After many unsuitable candidates, Gary chooses Tony, played by Neil Morrissey, to be his new roommate. Tony is unemployed a great deal of the time but he and Gary become close mates and Gary supports Tony much as he did Dermot.

For five years Tony pursues Deborah while Gary and Dorothy have their ups and downs. Deborah moves in with Gary to help solidify their relationship, but having Tony there all the time makes it difficult for the couple to gel. Things work out in the long run with a wedding and a baby... but I don't want to give away all the secrets!

There are many video clips online for Men Behaving Badly and they are okay for a few minutes at a time but to really enjoy the series you should go ahead and buy it like I did. The complete collection of the original British TV show can be purchased for about $75 at Amazon. You won't be sorry!
