Martin Clunes, star of the Doc Martin ITV series with his dog Mary
Mary, the lovely dog pictured above in Martin's embrace above, had a walk-on part in series one, episode five
where a young girl becomes infatuated with Doc Martin after he realigned her very painful dislocated shoulder. The
girl finds reasons to stop by and visit the Doc and on one occasion she is walking Mary.
April 19, 2010: Sad to report that Mary Elisabeth, the Clunes family beloved dog, has died as reported by Helen
Stiles in her article Martin Clunes: My Life in Dorset.

The premise of Doc Martin is that Dr. Martin Ellingham was a "golden boy" surgeon in London when he was suddenly
struck with hemophobia during a very routine operation and forced to discontinue practicing
surgery as a result. He moved to Portwenn, the fictional town occupying the incredibly beautiful location of
Port Isaac, Cornwall, United Kingdom; where he spent time as a boy with his Auntie Joan, played by the
indomitable Stephanie Cole. And he took on the local practice recently vacated by the demise of the old
doctor.

The doc is used to the sterile, humorless life of a surgeon who doesn't need to know
much about a patient other than where to cut. He has no people skills and is at best a curmudgeon with a
total lack of social grace. But he is very skilled as a general practitioner and is eventually accepted by
the close-knit community as their GP.
There is a love interest for Doc Martin as he is attracted to school head mistress
Louisa Glasson, played by Caroline Catz. They have chemistry but Martin is constantly upsetting her with his
lack of social skills and he just doesn't get it. It's a very realistic relationship with fleeting moments of
comfortable pleasure swallowed up by the day-to-day grind of coping with an imperfect
world.

Martin Clunes plays the role of Doc Martin in a manner which seems effortless but
that is surely just a hallmark of his talent and skill as an actor.

You can own the DVD series of Doc Martin and enjoy it at home
anytime. While it's great that PBS puts it on air, they often change their schedule without notice and/or
pre-empt programming frequently for their many fund raising events. And while there are many clips available
on YouTube, it is SO much more pleasant to watch the series in order on your TV.
All of Series 1 is freely available at Hulu with minimal sponsor advertising delays.
For the best viewing possible in the comfort of your own home, why not add these DVD's to your

If you've never seen Doc Martin, you may find it interesting that the character of Doc Martin
does not encourage people to come to his surgery unless they are ill, (that's what they call a doctor's office over
there...) and he really resents making house calls for anyone, even when they are literally on death's door.
The show is captivating with it's many well formed inhabitants of fictitious Portwenn, and the very real and
breathtaking beauty of the actual Port Isaac location. Watch the YouTube clips below for more of an
introduction.
Series 1, Episode 1: Martin goes to Portwenn.
Series2, Episode 8: Louisa wants to know Martin better.

I love that he said his favorite episode was the one with Mary in it (see the
top of this page). I don't think they understood that Mary was his dog, not the teenager in
the clip.
